Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy (most often known simply as Felix Mendelssohn) composed two of these three Sonatas for Violin and Pianoforte when he was very young: the first, in F Major, was written in 1820, when he was 11; the second, Op. 4 in f minor, came just three years later. Mendelssohn seems to have been quite fond of the key of F, because the third sonata in this volume is also in F Major, though he composed it quite a bit later than the other two - almost 20 years later, in fact, in 1838. He revised it the following year. Both versions are included in this edition.
