Theme-and-variation pieces occupya very large chunk of Paganini’s compositional catalogue. This particular set of variations was composedon a stirring theme from Rossini’s tragic opera, Mose in Egitto (Moses in Egypt). In the opera, the tune issung by Moses on the shore of the Red Sea, whoprays for deliverance from Pharaoh’s pursuing army; his prayer is triumphantlyanswered, and the bad guys meet their doom in the water. Requiring many of the same technical acrobaticsas Paganini’s other works, this piece makes a great recital finale or encore!
